The Recording Academy has made adjustments to the rules for the upcoming 2026 Grammy Awards, introducing five new categories. One of the new additions is the best Asian pop music performance category, honoring releases from various genres like K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop. Another new category is the best traditional pop vocal performance, recognizing artists whose music stands out from contemporary pop styles.
Furthermore, a new best Latin song category has been introduced to acknowledge songwriters who have worked on Spanish-language songs predominantly. Changes have also been implemented in the R&B and folk categories. The best R&B collaboration or duo/group performance award has been introduced alongside the redefined best R&B solo performance category.
Similar to the changes in the country music category last year, the folk genre has undergone alterations. The best folk album has been transformed into the best contemporary folk album, with the addition of a new category for best traditional folk album.
Apart from the new categories, modifications have been made to the eligibility criteria for certain awards. Notably, adjustments have been made to the best new artist category, allowing artists to submit up to four times, an increase from the previous limit of three submissions. This change aims to better reflect the evolving music landscape where artists may take time to establish themselves.
Additionally, the Grammys have expanded the voting privileges for certain qualified members to participate in more categories. Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Grammy Awards, highlighting the changes as a reflection of the diverse music industry and the talented individuals shaping it. Mason Jr. emphasized the excitement for the evolving landscape of music as the new rules come into effect for the upcoming year.
