A couple in Kamloops, British Columbia, utilized 3D printing technology to create a feeding stand for a foster kitten with a unique medical condition. Piglet, a five-month-old kitten under the care of Angela and Jason Lyall, faced feeding challenges since being rescued at two days old. Despite being a bottle-fed kitten, Piglet struggled to suckle properly and lagged in growth compared to her littermates.
Initially presumed lethargic, Piglet’s health deteriorated, leading to a pneumonia diagnosis. However, further tests revealed that Piglet likely suffered from megaesophagus, a condition affecting the food passage to the stomach. To address this, the couple designed a customized vertical feeding stand using a free online template, which prevented Piglet from regurgitating food and minimized the risk of aspiration.
The couple’s adaptation garnered attention online, with a viral video showcasing Piglet’s innovative feeding solution. Angela emphasized the rarity of megaesophagus in cats compared to dogs and hoped Piglet’s story would raise awareness among pet owners. The vertical feeding stand is adjustable to accommodate Piglet’s growth, as she requires five feedings daily and post-meal upright positioning to aid digestion.
The Lyalls expressed gratitude for Piglet’s progress, highlighting the collective effort involved in her care. Despite challenging moments, they remain dedicated to ensuring Piglet’s well-being and are delighted to witness her thriving.
