Tennis Canada has announced that the Davis Cup match between Canada and Israel in Halifax will take place behind closed doors this week due to safety concerns. This decision, made in consultation with the International Tennis Federation, was based on escalating safety concerns and information from local authorities and security agencies. The organization stated that playing without spectators was necessary to ensure the safety of all involved.
The move comes after over 400 Canadian athletes and academics, led by Olympic runner Moh Ahmed, urged Tennis Canada to cancel the event in protest of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The letter referenced concerns raised by scholars and human rights groups, describing the situation as genocide against Palestinians.
In response, Tennis Canada acknowledged the complexity of the Middle East situation. The International Tennis Federation also emphasized the importance of safety for players, supporters, and staff, stating that detailed security advice was considered before reaching the decision.
Originally planned to be held at Scotiabank Centre, the matches will now be livestreamed as tickets were no longer available following the closure to fans. Those who purchased tickets will receive full refunds. The winning team will advance to the 2026 Davis Cup Qualifiers.
A “March for Palestine” is scheduled to coincide with the tie, organized by Halifax residents in response to the event closure. Activist El Jones noted that community pressure played a role in the decision, emphasizing the rejection of supporting genocide and sportswashing.
Halifax had previously approved funding for the event, but this support was revoked as it no longer provided the expected economic benefits due to the closure. Mayor Andy Fillmore encouraged fans to support Team Canada from their hotel rooms and expressed confidence in the security measures in place.
Events East confirmed that the public safety plan for the event remains active and enforced. Halifax Regional Police clarified they were not involved in the decision to close the venue. The Davis Cup match winner will advance to the 2026 Qualifiers.
