His representatives confirmed that Dane succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, less than a year after revealing his diagnosis.

During his battle with ALS, Dane was surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were his world. He was remembered as a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing similar challenges. Dane’s passing prompted an outpouring of condolences from his Hollywood colleagues and co-stars who fondly recalled his warmth, humor, and mischievous charm on set.

Among those paying tribute was actor Alyssa Milano, who shared memories of Dane’s razor-sharp humor and unique charm from their time working together on “Charmed.” Co-star Patrick Dempsey praised Dane for bringing fun and humor to the set of “Grey’s Anatomy,” emphasizing his positive impact and easy-going nature. Showrunners and creators, including Shonda Rhimes and Sam Levinson, also honored Dane for his talent and friendship.

Born on November 9, 1972, in northern California, Dane ventured into acting after high school, securing roles in various TV shows before landing his breakthrough role as Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as McSteamy, in “Grey’s Anatomy.” He later starred in “Euphoria” and “The Last Ship,” showcasing his versatility as an actor.

In April 2025, Dane disclosed his ALS diagnosis and subsequently became an advocate for ALS awareness. Recognized for his dedication, he was named advocate of the year by the ALS Network. Dane’s memoir, “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” is set to be released this year, recounting pivotal moments in his life, including his career milestones, family life, and ALS diagnosis.

Eric Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters. Despite their separation in 2017 and subsequent divorce filing by Gayheart, the couple maintained a complex relationship. Reflecting on Dane’s diagnosis, Gayheart shared insights into their unique bond and emphasized the importance of living life with purpose and meaning.
