Farmers in Nova Scotia are optimistic that the current winter snowfall will aid in recovering from the severe drought experienced last year. Various regions in the province have received an average or slightly above-average amount of snow, with most areas having snow cover since mid- to late January. Alicia King, the president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture and a local farmer, expressed relief at the snowfall, emphasizing its role in protecting soil and crops while providing essential moisture as it melts.

Last year, Nova Scotia faced a significant drought, receiving less than 40% of its normal precipitation, with the southwestern part experiencing a one-in-50-year drought. The dry conditions severely impacted fruit trees, particularly apple trees, causing leaf loss and shriveled fruit. Emily Lutz, the executive director of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers’ Association, highlighted the challenges faced by fruit trees during the drought and expressed hope for their recovery with the current winter conditions.

Meteorologist Ian Hubbard noted that most parts of Nova Scotia have witnessed average or above-average snowfall this winter, providing essential moisture for the ground. The slow and steady melt of the snow is crucial for recharging groundwater, ensuring adequate water supply for agriculture. Barret Kurylyk, an associate professor specializing in hydrogeology, emphasized the significance of a gradual snowmelt in allowing water to penetrate the soil and replenish aquifers effectively.

Despite the positive impact of the winter snow, Agriculture Canada reported moderate to severe drought conditions in Nova Scotia as of January 31. Looking ahead, Hubbard predicted warmer-than-normal temperatures for March, which could influence the snowmelt process and further aid in alleviating drought concerns in the region.
