The former leader of the infamous Haitian gang 400 Mawozo has been given a life sentence in a U.S. court for orchestrating the abduction of a group of American missionaries and a Canadian individual in 2021.

Joly “Yonyon” Germine, aged 34, was convicted in May after a 10-day trial on charges of conspiracy to commit hostage-taking and 16 counts of kidnapping U.S. nationals for ransom. He had previously pleaded guilty and received a 35-year sentence for smuggling firearms to Haiti and laundering ransom money from previous abductions.

Germine, who has been in U.S. custody since May 2022, will not be eligible for supervised release under the terms of his latest sentence. The life imprisonment was imposed by a U.S. District Court in Washington for his role in masterminding the abduction of 16 U.S. citizens, including five children, who were part of a Christian Aid Ministries group from Ohio, alongside a Canadian member.

The victims were taken by masked gunmen from 400 Mawozo after visiting an orphanage in Haiti. The gang members robbed them at gunpoint, demanded $1 million US per hostage for their release, and communicated with Germine during the hostage crisis.

Although the gang initially threatened to harm the hostages if ransom was not paid, they later proposed releasing Germine from Haitian custody instead of accepting ransom payments. The missionaries were held captive for 62 days before most of them escaped under the cover of darkness and trekked out of the gang’s territory, with five hostages being released earlier.

During the trial, evidence revealed Germine’s involvement in planning the abductions, selecting abduction locations, and setting an unattainable $17 million US ransom demand to secure his own release from prison. Haiti extradited Germine to the U.S. at the request of the American government.

Haiti continues to experience a high incidence of ransom kidnappings, with close to 1,500 abductions reported in the previous year and nearly 2,500 in the current year.
