President Vladimir Putin stated in an interview that Russia is prepared to gain full control over Ukraine’s Donbas region through military means if Ukrainian forces do not withdraw, a proposition rejected by Kyiv. Since February 2022, tens of thousands of troops were deployed by Putin into Ukraine following years of conflict between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian troops in the Donbas area, consisting of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Putin emphasized the ultimatum, stating that the territories must be taken back either through force or by the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy opposed the idea of ceding territory to Russia, emphasizing that Moscow should not be rewarded for instigating the war.
Despite Russia controlling nearly 20% of Ukraine, including Crimea annexed in 2014, a significant portion of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and minor parts of other regions, discussions with the U.S. have revolved around a potential peace agreement. Russia’s consistent demand for complete control over Donbas, with informal recognition from the U.S., has been a point of contention.
The international community largely refuses to acknowledge Russia’s claims over Ukrainian regions, considering them part of Ukraine. Recent talks between U.S. envoys and Putin have been described as fruitful, with both sides accepting certain proposals while encountering challenges on specific points.
Tragic incidents continue to unfold in Ukraine, with Russian attacks causing casualties among civilians, including children. The conflict has escalated, causing significant damage to residential areas and infrastructure, leaving thousands without essential services like power and heating. As the situation worsens, efforts are being made to resolve the conflict and prevent further civilian casualties.
In the midst of these developments, Turkey has called for the protection of energy infrastructure from the conflict, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution. The ongoing conflict remains a pressing issue, with hopes for a swift end to the devastating war.
