Sooren Moosavy is in search of an affordable electric vehicle in the United States due to environmental concerns and a preference for the smooth ride of EVs. However, the 28-year-old Baltimore resident is facing a challenge as he considers purchasing vehicles from Chinese automakers, including models from BYD, Geely, and Zeekr, which are not readily available for purchase or test drives in the U.S.

Moosavy is not the only one interested in exploring cheaper Chinese cars as the average cost of a new car in the U.S. nears $50,000. Despite opposition from the automotive industry and major U.S. political parties, more consumers are open to the idea of buying Chinese cars at lower price points.

While Chinese electric vehicles have gained popularity in Europe, Latin America, and Canada, the U.S. government has imposed tariffs exceeding 100% on these vehicles, citing concerns over data security and protecting American jobs.

In contrast, Chinese EVs are sold in Europe for prices below $30,000, offering advanced features like driving assistance software, built-in mini fridges, and even karaoke options for passengers.

China has surpassed Japan to become the world’s leading vehicle exporter, with Canada recently reducing tariffs to 6.1% on an initial quota of 49,000 Chinese EVs annually.

Although U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed openness to Chinese automakers operating in the U.S. if they employ American workers, major auto trade groups have urged the government to keep Chinese carmakers out of the country citing competitiveness concerns.

Consumers in the U.S. have reservations about Chinese car imports, including worries about data security and protecting American businesses. A recent survey by The Harris Poll and Cox found that a limited number of dealers support the entry of Chinese auto brands into the U.S. market, citing concerns about safety standards.

Despite these challenges, consumer interest in Chinese cars remains high, with almost half of surveyed U.S. consumers considering Chinese cars to offer excellent value. Popular YouTube car reviewer Rich Benoit highlights the affordability of Chinese models as a key attraction for many potential buyers.

Benoit is contemplating purchasing a BYD model in Mexico and driving it across the U.S. border, emphasizing the desire to own a Chinese EV in America.
