Ask anyone in Denare Beach, and they will affirm that Rhonda Werbicki’s residence was the Halloween hotspot in the northern Saskatchewan village. Reflecting on her absence during this Halloween season, Werbicki expressed her disappointment, emphasizing her passion for elaborate Halloween decorations.
A devastating wildfire on June 2 razed Werbicki’s family home and over 200 other residences in the remote lakeside community of Denare Beach, situated in northeast Saskatchewan. Currently residing in Gimli, Manitoba, approximately 750 kilometers away, Werbicki visited Denare Beach briefly to support her husband, who remained to oversee the extensive cleanup of residential lots.
The wildfire and its aftermath loom large in residents’ minds, despite attempts to engage in normal conversations about Halloween, weather, or sports events like the Toronto Blue Jays’ World Series journey. The emotional toll of the disaster is evident, with Werbicki recounting a poignant moment at a store where she unexpectedly broke down upon seeing a Christmas tree.
Looking ahead, Denare Beach is in the process of rebuilding and recovering from the catastrophic event. The community mobilized swiftly to clear debris and prepare lots for new construction. The concerted effort involved removing thousands of truckloads of debris and hazardous materials throughout the summer, with plans to repurpose salvaged materials.
Residents like Brooke Kindel, who spent the summer in temporary accommodations, are racing against time to lay foundations before winter sets in. The Kindel family is constructing a shop where they will reside in a camper trailer while awaiting the completion of their new home.
Uncertainty looms over the future as residents grapple with the decision to rebuild amidst fears of a recurrence of such a disaster. While plans for reconstruction are underway, concerns about fire safety and government support persist, with the community advocating for enhanced resources and readiness measures.
The resiliency and solidarity of Denare Beach residents shine through as they navigate the challenges of rebuilding their lives and community post-wildfire. Despite the setbacks and losses, there is a sense of optimism and determination to forge ahead, rebuild stronger, and cherish the moments of joy and togetherness that lie ahead.
