After completing a record-breaking journey of 406,771 kilometers around the moon, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, along with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, are preparing to share their experiences with the public. The four astronauts are scheduled to answer questions from the media at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, at 2:30 p.m. ET today, with CBC.ca live streaming the news conference.

Since their return to Earth last Friday, the astronauts have undergone medical examinations and debriefings but have also enjoyed heartwarming reunions with their families. Victor Glover received a warm welcome home in League City, Texas, with neighbors lining the sidewalks, waving flags and signs in celebration. Christina Koch was greeted emotionally by her dog, Sadie.

On Saturday, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman welcomed the astronauts, along with numerous VIP guests, at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston. The event was a poignant moment for the crew, who had trained together for years and spent 10 days in a capsule the size of a small van.

During the welcome ceremony, Wiseman expressed the deep bond between the crew members and the unique experience they shared, emphasizing the significance of being human and living on Earth. Despite the emotional homecoming, the astronauts wasted no time getting back to work. Hansen underwent rigorous training, simulating surface activities in a lunar spacesuit, to prepare for potential moon missions.

Additionally, Hansen announced the winner of the Aqualunar Challenge, a competition aimed at developing water purification solutions for the moon. The $400,000 prize was awarded to the Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation. NASA is now looking to accelerate the Artemis missions’ launch cadence, with plans for building a lunar base in the future.

At the Houston event, Hansen praised the collaborative effort behind the mission and highlighted the team’s dedication. He emphasized that the astronauts were a reflection of the collective effort involved in the success of the mission, encouraging the audience to see themselves in the shared achievement.
