Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev was hospitalized following an on-ice incident during Saturday night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers, confirmed head coach Craig Berube. The collision occurred between Tanev and Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov with 11:37 left in the game. Although the impact was shoulder-to-shoulder, Tanev’s head jerked back upon contact, leading him to remain down on the ice.

Medical staff promptly attended to Tanev, ensuring the stabilization of his head and neck before transferring him onto a stretcher for removal from the ice. This unfortunate event took place during Tanev’s return to play after sitting out four games due to a concussion. Michkov was penalized for interference in the aftermath.

Post-game, Berube mentioned that Tanev was transported to a Philadelphia hospital for evaluations and fortunately retained movement in all limbs. There was a possibility that Tanev might accompany the team back to Toronto. Berube expressed optimism about Tanev’s condition, awaiting further test results.

Tanev contributed with an assist on Jake McCabe’s goal during the second period. Auston Matthews, who scored in the game, expressed the team’s concern and support for Tanev, emphasizing his importance to the team and sending well wishes for his recovery.
