Halifax Mooseheads forward Alec Nasreddine has firsthand knowledge that pursuing a professional hockey career is far from glamorous. “It’s a challenging journey,” remarked the 18-year-old player. “You spend a lot of time away from home. While it’s a dream job, it demands significant sacrifices.”
Raised by his father, Alain Nasreddine, a veteran of a 15-season pro hockey career spanning various teams and leagues, Alec Nasreddine was exposed to the realities of the sport from a young age. Born in Pittsburgh in 2007, Alec witnessed his father transition from playing to coaching, leading to their family residing in multiple locations such as New Jersey and Texas. Presently, Alain Nasreddine serves as an assistant coach for the NHL’s Dallas Stars.
Growing up amidst professional hockey environments, Alec Nasreddine observed the dedication required for success, from rigorous training routines to disciplined dietary habits. While aspiring to play in the NHL, Alec acknowledges that his path will differ from his father’s, who had to fight his way through challenges to reach the top.
Alain Nasreddine, who notably played in the QMJHL during the early 1990s, recalls his rookie year’s intense game with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, marked by frequent altercations. Reflecting on his fighting days as a young player, he acknowledges the role it played in his career development but emphasizes that evolving as a player beyond physicality was crucial for prolonged success.
In the evolving landscape of hockey, where stricter penalties have reduced fighting incidents, Alec Nasreddine aims to pursue his hockey dreams without relying on physical altercations. Despite facing limited playing opportunities on the Mooseheads’ fourth line this season, Alec remains determined to improve and prove his worth on the ice.
In a supportive role, Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell, who previously played alongside Alain Nasreddine, emphasizes the importance of character players like Alec Nasreddine in the team dynamic. While acknowledging the challenges Alec faces, Russell encourages him to maintain a positive attitude and contribute to team morale.
Alain Nasreddine, drawing from his own experiences, advises his son to persevere through adversity and remain dedicated to his goals. With a career marked by resilience and determination, Alain Nasreddine serves as a guiding figure for Alec, instilling the values of hard work and belief in oneself.
As Alec Nasreddine navigates the hurdles of his hockey career, he remains focused on continuous improvement and resilience, embodying the lessons passed down by his father.
