The current prices of coffee are notably high. However, a potential $1.85 million settlement with Keurig, a coffee pod company, may offer some compensation to consumers.

An announcement was made on Monday, stating that individuals in Canada who bought Keurig pods, machines, or brewing systems between June 8, 2016, and now might qualify for a payout as part of a lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Keurig misrepresented the recyclability of its pods.

Keurig Canada acknowledged that while their advertising suggested the pods could be recycled in various locations, in reality, municipal recycling programs in provinces outside of British Columbia and Quebec do not widely accept K-Cup pods.

As part of the settlement, Keurig has committed to modifying its pod and brewer packaging, as well as its future advertisements. Additionally, they will pay an administrative penalty and contribute to an environmental charity.

For those interested in receiving compensation from the settlement, the process will be explained below.

Details of the Lawsuit

The proposed class action in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice alleges that Keurig’s K-Cup pods and brewing machines sold in Canada after June 8, 2016, contained misleading information regarding pod recyclability.

Although Keurig denies any wrongdoing and asserts that their actions were legal, a settlement was reached between the plaintiff and defendant to avoid further legal uncertainties and costs.

The class action was officially certified on Oct. 22, 2025, pending settlement approval.

Prior to this, Keurig underwent investigation by the Competition Bureau of Canada for asserting that their single-use plastic pods could be recycled by removing the metallic lid and emptying the contents. However, the bureau found that K-Cups are not widely recyclable in most provinces except Quebec and British Columbia.
