The latest trending term that has taken over online platforms, classrooms, and now, officially as the word of the year, is “67” (also denoted as “6-7” or “six-seven”). Dictionary.com recently unveiled this term as the word of the year for 2025, describing it as a form of “classic brainrot slang” that embraces purposeful nonsensicality and revels in the absurdity of language.

In essence, “6-7” serves as a versatile expression, conveying meanings ranging from “so-so” to ambiguity or even silence. It has been increasingly used in lively group settings like sports events or more recently, in educational environments, much to the dismay of educators.

According to Steve Johnson, the director of lexicography for the Dictionary Media Group, “6-7” stands out as one of the few words of the year that can function as an interjection, embodying the evolving linguistic landscape.

While the exact origins of the term remain murky, it is often linked to the 2024 track “Doot Doot (6 7)” by Skrilla or viral video edits featuring NBA player LaMelo Ball, known for his towering height of six feet seven inches.

The announcement of “67” as the word of the year sparked surprise and debate online, with many questioning the validity of designating a number or seemingly meaningless phrase as the word of the year. However, Johnson defends the choice, asserting that “67” encapsulates the prevailing brainrot culture that has permeated both online spaces and real-world interactions, serving as a blend of an inside joke, social cue, and performative element.

Across social media platforms, videos showcase intricate handshakes spelling out “6-7,” educators incorporating the term into their teachings, artists crafting food and art in the shape of “6-7,” and even a takeout joint erupting in celebration when order number “6-7” is called. The term even made an appearance in a recent episode of “South Park.”

From a statistical standpoint, “6-7” witnessed a substantial surge in popularity this year, with its frequency in digital media spiking sixfold in October 2025 compared to the previous year. TikTok analytics reported over two million posts featuring the hashtag #67 in the past year, with a noticeable uptick in usage in recent months.

Among the other contenders on Dictionary.com’s shortlist for the 2025 word of the year were terms like “aura farming,” “Gen Z stare,” “tariff,” and “tradwife.”
