A proposal by the municipality to rename a street in Halifax has sparked conversations among residents, with some expressing sadness over the potential loss of historical significance associated with the street.
The city has opted to rename Lynwood Drive in the Rockingham neighborhood of Halifax. This street is one of three Lynwood Drives in the city, with the others located in Dartmouth and Brookside.
The decision to rename the Rockingham location was made due to concerns about public safety and confusion arising from duplicated street names. The Rockingham Lynwood Drive was chosen as it has the fewest number of addresses, with 14 residences, compared to 23 in Dartmouth and 37 in Brookside, as per city data.
However, some residents argue that numerical figures should not be the sole consideration in this decision-making process.
‘A Loss to Mourn’
Patricia Arab, a long-time resident of Lynwood Drive, shared her family’s deep connection to the street, dating back to the late 1950s when her grandfather established their home there. The street served as a significant gathering place for the early Lebanese immigrant community in Halifax.
Arab emphasized the emotional attachment and historical importance of the street, expressing concerns that renaming it would erase the legacy of the early Lebanese pioneers and their contributions to the community.
Support for retaining the Lynwood Drive name has been voiced by the Canadian Lebanon Society of Halifax and Wadih Fares, the Honorary Consulate of Lebanon to Nova Scotia, who have submitted letters to the Halifax regional council in favor of preserving the street’s name in Rockingham.

Arab has initiated an online petition urging the city to reconsider the name change, which has garnered over 350 signatures.
She described the street name as integral to her identity and family history, stressing that losing it would feel like losing a significant part of her heritage.
The city considers various factors when renaming streets, including signage replacement costs, historical relevance, and public safety, with preference given to streets impacting the fewest addresses.
Addressing Concerns
Residents along Lynwood Drive in Rockingham shared mixed feelings about the potential renaming, with some expressing acceptance towards the change.
One resident, Luke Woodhead, highlighted the challenges posed by having multiple residences with the same address, causing delivery mix-ups and potential confusion for emergency services.

Woodhead pointed out the inconvenience caused by mistaken deliveries and emphasized the importance of clarity for emergency responders.
Concerns were raised by residents regarding the potential confusion if emergency services were dispatched to the wrong location due to duplicated street names.
Exploring New Names
Residents of Rockingham’s Lynwood Drive were invited to suggest alternative names for the street. The shortlist includes various options such as Bennys Way, Rockingham Heights, Jupiter Drive, Monarda Hill, and others.
- Residents will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed names, with the winning choice to be presented to the council for approval.
Meow Drive was among the suggested options but faced mixed reactions from residents, with many expressing hesitance towards the unconventional name.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the selection process, and the final decision will be subject to council approval.
