Two Thunder Bay residents have successfully completed the grueling Moab 240 Trail Race, considered one of the most challenging foot races globally. The ultra-marathon spans 386 kilometers through Utah’s desert canyons, red rock mesas, and mountain peaks, involving significant elevation changes.

Among this year’s finishers were Andrew Smith and John Power, who endured physical and mental tests during the event. Participants have a maximum of 117 hours to finish the race, passing through 15 aid stations and five sleep stations manned by volunteers and medical personnel.

For Power, this marked his longest race to date. He mentioned that his training regimen began almost a year before the race, incorporating running, strength training, and nutrition planning. Despite extensive preparation, Power faced unforeseen challenges due to inclement weather.

The race presented unexpected obstacles as Power encountered rain and mud instead of the anticipated heat and sand. Battling adverse weather conditions, especially during intense rain and wind while traversing two difficult course sections, tested his physical and mental resilience.

Smith, a repeat participant in the Moab 240, shared that his motivation stemmed from a desire to push himself outside his comfort zone. He emphasized the satisfaction of embracing discomfort and proving his ability to overcome challenging situations.

Reflecting on the diverse landscapes encountered during the race, Smith highlighted the punishing weather conditions, including thunderstorms and sticky mud hindering progress. Despite enduring physical strains like losing toenails and limited knee mobility, the runners found solace and fulfillment upon reaching the finish line.

Both athletes expressed openness to future ultramarathons, although Power humorously mentioned his wife’s reservations about another 200-mile race. Smith hinted at potential participation in a 300-mile race after completing the Moab 240 twice.
