A car crashed into the entrance of Cowichan District Hospital’s emergency room in Duncan on Vancouver Island, prompting an investigation by the RCMP. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. PT on Saturday when a black Chevrolet Traverse SUV was found lodged in the hospital doors. Photos of the vehicle in the ER waiting room quickly spread on social media.
The driver, identified as a 42-year-old woman, reportedly assaulted two paramedics who had responded to the scene, resulting in minor injuries to one paramedic. Fortunately, no hospital staff or patients were harmed, according to a statement from Island Health.
The driver was eventually subdued and apprehended under the Mental Health Act. Island Health is evaluating the affected area, noting that there is no lasting structural damage to the building. Temporary doors have been put in place, ensuring continued patient access without disruption.
Despite the incident, the hospital’s emergency department remains operational for those requiring immediate medical attention. Permanent repairs have not been scheduled yet, and the cost remains undetermined. Island Health expressed gratitude for the prompt response of its staff and the assistance from North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.
