New Brunswick Faces Moderate Drought Ahead of Summer

Despite a wet spring, a significant portion of New Brunswick is currently experiencing moderate drought conditions, raising concerns for the upcoming summer season. The latest report from the Canada Drought Monitor, as of April 30, indicates abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions throughout the province, with the exception of the northwest region.

This represents an improvement from the severe drought observed in certain areas last month, as central New Brunswick faced extreme drought conditions as of Feb. 28. Environmental scientist Matthew Alexander, a groundwater hydrology expert at Fundy Engineering, noted that the lingering drought conditions are a consequence of the dry spell experienced last summer.

Last year, signs of drought began to emerge by July 31, with much of the province classified as abnormally dry, and the eastern regions facing moderate to severe drought. By August 31, the entire province had slipped into moderate, severe, or extreme drought categories.

The outlook for the upcoming summer suggests a continuation of hot and dry conditions, with Environment and Climate Change Canada’s seasonal forecast indicating a 66% probability of above-normal temperatures from July to September. Precipitation levels remain uncertain, with equal chances predicted for above, normal, and below-average rainfall.

Many residents in New Brunswick encountered dry wells last summer, a situation that could potentially recur. Alexander warned that even with anticipated precipitation, immediate relief from drought conditions is unlikely, as it takes a considerable amount of time for water to replenish groundwater levels tapped by wells.

Conservation of water resources is being emphasized by provincial authorities, with online resources available to assist residents in water-saving practices. While some improvements have been noted, sustained and adequate rainfall will be crucial to maintain progress, as both surface water and groundwater levels are still below normal.
