The Paris prosecutor announced on Saturday that two additional suspects have been formally charged in connection with the theft of the crown jewels from the Louvre museum. According to Laure Beccuau, the prosecutor, a 37-year-old suspect has been accused of theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy, while a 38-year-old woman faces charges as an accomplice and both have been placed in custody.
Despite the charges, both individuals have denied their involvement in the heist. Earlier in the week, five individuals, including one identified through DNA evidence, were apprehended by the police in relation to the crime. Two men, aged 34 and 39 from Aubervilliers, were also charged with theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy.
Prosecutor Laure Beccuau mentioned that the two suspects provided limited information and partially confessed to their roles in the crime. It is believed that they are the individuals who forcibly entered the Apollo Gallery. One of the suspects was intercepted at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport with a one-way ticket to Algeria, and his DNA matched samples recovered from a scooter used during the escape.
As per French law, detailed personal information about the arrested individuals is withheld to safeguard the integrity of the investigation and protect the privacy of the victims. Only the prosecutor is authorized to disclose information publicly, and any breach of this confidentiality can lead to legal repercussions.
