Imagine living in a house with walls only 2.54 mm thick, where a breach could mean disaster. This scenario mirrors the ongoing situation aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Most recently, on June 5, five out of seven astronauts aboard the ISS were directed to seek refuge in SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule due to a persistent leak that Russian cosmonauts were attempting to fix.

The news of NASA’s evacuation alert made alarming headlines. However, NASA’s live feed on YouTube remained calm, issuing clear instructions to the crew without panic.

The reason behind the shelter order was the ongoing repair attempts by the cosmonauts to address the prolonged leak. NASA advised the astronauts to take precautions “out of an abundance of caution,” as mentioned by spokesperson Bethany Stevens.

The ISS, initially designed for a 15-year lifespan, has exceeded expectations but is now showing signs of wear and tear. Concerns about cracks and air leaks in the Service Module Transfer Tunnel have been highlighted in a 2024 report from the Office of the Inspector General.

Despite the challenges, the ISS’s operation has been extended until 2030. Plans for a replacement station are underway to ensure continued space exploration. Private companies like Axiom are also working on their own space station projects.

While the ISS has faced various issues, including leaks and technical failures, NASA and Roscosmos remain vigilant. The space station continues to facilitate scientific research and technology advancements, ensuring the safety of astronauts onboard.

With the ISS still operational and astronauts conducting experiments, the space station maintains its crucial role in space exploration. Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk is scheduled for a mission to the ISS in September, benefiting from the station’s continued functionality.
