Health experts are advising individuals to promptly seek medical attention if they come into contact with bats to prevent potential rabies transmission. In a recent publication in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, infectious disease specialists recounted the tragic case of a child who succumbed to rabies nearly two years ago.

Dr. Brian Hummel, a senior author of the case report and a pediatric infectious disease physician at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, emphasized the importance of learning from the incident to raise awareness about rabies risks. The 11-year-old boy encountered a bat at a northern Ontario cottage in the summer of 2024, which led to his untimely death.

Despite the absence of visible scratches or bites on the boy’s face and the bat’s seemingly normal behavior, his health deteriorated weeks later. Following visits to medical facilities, his condition worsened, and he eventually passed away with his family by his side.

Rabies, once symptoms manifest, is incurable. However, early intervention post-exposure can prevent the virus from progressing. Dr. Hummel highlighted the effectiveness of preventive measures if administered before symptoms appear, contrasting the high fatality rate of symptomatic rabies infections.

While rare in Canada, with only 28 cases reported since 1924, rabies poses a severe threat once contracted. Bats are the primary carriers of the virus, making any contact with them a significant risk. Even without noticeable injuries, bat saliva can transmit the virus through mucous membranes or cuts.

Healthcare providers collaborate with public health authorities to assess the necessity of post-exposure prophylaxis, comprising a series of vaccinations and antibody injections. The vaccination process stimulates an immune response against the rabies virus, with immunoglobulin providing immediate defense.

Mild side effects such as fever and chills are common after vaccination, with a minimal risk of severe reactions. Despite potential adverse effects, the critical need to prevent rabies-related fatalities underscores the importance of seeking medical care promptly after bat contact.
