A transit driver in Winnipeg was injured by a pellet gun during a confrontation with a passenger on a bus in North Kildonan on Monday, according to police. The incident occurred at the intersection of Gateway and Springfield roads, with the driver sustaining minor injuries to the hand and receiving treatment at a hospital. Despite efforts to locate the youth responsible, the police were unsuccessful.
Amalgamated Transit Union president Chris Scott described the driver’s injury as defensive, emphasizing the psychological impact of the assault. The altercation arose when a passenger, wanting to disembark at a green light, became agitated when the driver suggested waiting. This incident contributes to a rising trend in bus-related incidents, with 221 reported this year, including approximately 92 assaults on transit staff.
Scott expressed concern over the potential staffing implications following the recent assault, noting that 18 drivers have already resigned since October. He highlighted the need for swift action in enhancing safety measures, such as the installation of full shields in driver compartments, a process expected to take at least a year. Community safety officers and increased police presence on buses are part of ongoing efforts to address safety concerns.
While the incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by transit workers, efforts are being made to enhance safety protocols and support affected employees. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact the major crimes unit or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers. The transit advisory committee is working on proposals to expedite safety enhancements and address the longstanding issue of violence on Winnipeg Transit buses.
