A young child sustained severe injuries following an encounter with a coyote at a playground in Whitby, Ontario, where numerous sightings have been reported recently, according to Durham police. The incident occurred at Vanier Park, where a two-year-old boy was bitten on the face by a coyote that entered the area on Sunday evening. The child’s guardian and bystanders managed to scare off the coyote before the boy was rushed to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after the playground incident, another coyote in distress was reported near Harriet and Annes streets, prompting police response. The animal was located and safely removed without causing any harm. Durham police are collaborating with the Town of Whitby, local animal services, and the Durham Region Health Department to investigate the incidents, monitor coyote activity, and prevent future encounters.

Following a recent spate of coyote incidents in Durham, including a previous child bitten in Whitby, authorities issued a public advisory urging caution, especially for pedestrians and pet owners, in public spaces. Police highlighted the importance of vigilance, particularly in areas like parks, playgrounds, and trails, where coyotes are most active during early morning and evening hours.

Notably, Whitby has recorded 96 coyote sightings in the past month alone, as indicated on the town’s online dashboard. Similar concerns have been raised in other Toronto-area communities, with incidents of coyote attacks prompting police warnings and the development of new strategies to manage coyote populations.

To ensure safety from coyotes, authorities recommend maintaining a safe distance if encountering one, supervising children outdoors, and following signage in areas with known coyote presence. Additionally, residents are advised to secure garbage and pet food, avoid areas where coyotes are spotted, and remain calm while making noise if faced with a coyote encounter. Reporting any coyote sightings to animal services is strongly encouraged by the police to prevent potential risks.
