For the second consecutive night, over 100 individuals, including children and pets, sought shelter in the basement of a community hall as red tornado warnings alarmed them on Saturday night. Chris Stewart recounted the experience of being in Aquadeo, Sask., during dinner when the fire alarm disrupted their evening. Aquadeo, situated 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords on Jackfish Lake, became the temporary refuge for the residents.

Stewart shared that initially, some children were fearful, but overall, everyone remained composed as they gathered in the basement of the hall. The crowd swelled to over 100 people on both nights.

Environment Canada reported that numerous communities in west-central Saskatchewan, such as Turtleford, Glaslyn, Medstead, Edam, Paynton, Rabbit Lake, and Spiritwood, were under tornado warnings due to a slow-moving system colliding with another system from Alberta. Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski noted that while such occurrences are uncommon, they are not unprecedented.

On Saturday, severe storms brought heavy rainfall ranging from 20 to 40 millimeters, hailstones of varying sizes near Neilburg, and wind gusts reaching 90 km/h near North Battleford. Although Environment Canada did not confirm any tornado touchdowns on Saturday, Shannon Risling witnessed a tornado touching down near Jackfish Lake on Friday.

Risling described the surreal experience of observing the tornado forming, touching down, retracting, and reappearing multiple times within a span of four minutes. Following the second touchdown, Risling promptly contacted Environment Canada to report the incident.

Looking ahead, Ziolkowski mentioned that the upcoming week’s forecast predicts a return to calmer conditions in the Prairies with a ridge of high pressure. By Sunday morning, Stewart was back on the water, enjoying the clear skies and a day of fishing under the favorable weather conditions.
