Odarka Altaravnekh was awakened by the scent of smoke and loud knocking at the door in the early hours of October 7. The apartment complex on Simms Street in St. John’s was engulfed in flames, leaving no time to gather essential belongings. Without hesitation, Altaravnekh and her spouse swiftly evacuated with their two children. Reflecting on the harrowing experience three weeks later, Altaravnekh described it as surreal, almost dreamlike.
They were unaware that they wouldn’t have an opportunity to retrieve crucial documents, including passports, work permits, school papers, and diplomas, which had been meticulously compiled with the assistance of the Association for New Canadians. Altaravnekh lamented the loss of these vital items due to the fire.
Altaravnekh’s husband, Mohammad Ali Altarawneh, disclosed that the 11-unit building housed a mix of residents, including students and families. Notably, seven of the families were refugees or new Canadians, like Ammar Samara, also from Ukraine, who is currently residing in a small hotel with his growing family after his wife recently gave birth to their fourth child.
Expressing hope for assistance from Newfoundland and Labrador Housing to secure a new residence before winter sets in, Altaravnekh conveyed the overwhelming challenges they are facing post-fire. She emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need for swift action to alleviate their current predicament.
The community rallied together to support the affected families. Mohammed Abdullah, CEO of Connections for Seniors and a co-owner of the Simms Street building, played a pivotal role in coordinating aid efforts. Immediate assistance, including transportation and donations, was provided to the displaced families. The outpouring of support from neighbors and the broader community resulted in a substantial collection of essential items and monetary contributions to aid in securing new housing for the affected families.
Altaravnekh expressed gratitude for the community’s swift response and generosity in the aftermath of the fire. She highlighted the overwhelming support received and the kindness extended by individuals offering help and encouragement. In addition to finding a new place to call home, the families are now focused on obtaining essential winter clothing and gear as they navigate through this challenging period.
Amidst the hardships they are facing, Altaravnekh emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and staying hopeful for better days ahead. The resilience and solidarity displayed by the community have been instrumental in providing comfort and support to those affected by the tragic incident.
