Canada celebrated its inclusion in China’s approved travel list for group tourists, following a recent meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Despite China’s slower pandemic recovery, group travel to various countries was permitted, excluding Canada in 2023 due to concerns over foreign interference. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand emphasized the significance of this reestablished status in fostering bilateral relations through tourism, highlighting Canada’s commitment to safety and hospitality for Chinese visitors.

The reinstatement came after productive discussions between Canadian officials and their Chinese counterparts, signaling a positive shift in the Canada-China relationship. Anticipating economic benefits, Anand and Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu expressed optimism about increased tourism revenue and improved ties with China. The move was announced by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, emphasizing enhanced people-to-people exchanges and mutual understanding between the two nations.

This development followed Carney’s meeting with President Xi during the APEC summit in South Korea, marking the first high-level interaction between Canadian and Chinese leaders since 2017. Tensions had escalated after the arrest of Huawei’s CFO in Vancouver, leading to the detention of Canadian citizens in China. Despite past challenges, efforts to mend relations have progressed, with both countries aiming to facilitate cross-border travel. While Canada’s exclusion from China’s travel list in 2023 raised concerns, ongoing interactions aim to address issues and enhance cooperation between the nations.
