Plumes of smoke are visible from multiple sites, with buildings reduced to rubble and numerous apartment complexes showing significant damage from Russian glide bombs. Dobropillia, a coal-mining town near the front line in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, is now home to a dwindling population scavenging for essentials under the watchful eye of drones dominating the battlefield.

In mid-October, amidst cloudy weather serving as a partial shield against the omnipresent drones, Viktoriya Sergeeva, a 45-year-old supermarket owner, shared her tragic story of losing her elderly parents in a recent bombing in Pokrovsk. Refugees like Sergeeva have flocked to Dobropillia, where the population has plummeted to under 1,500 residents from 28,000 prior to the Russian invasion.

Russian soldiers, infiltrating Ukrainian lines, now roam the streets of Dobropillia, blurring the distinction between friend and foe in a transformed battlefield devoid of a recognizable front line. The region, encompassing Dobropillia, Pokrovsk, and Myrnohrad, is witnessing intense warfare, with Russia striving to capture the area while Ukrainian forces, including a highly esteemed infantry brigade, defend their ground discreetly.

The conventional warfare of the past has given way to a new reality marked by drone warfare. Russian tactics have shifted towards infantry supported by drones, challenging Ukrainian forces to adapt. The proliferation of drones has necessitated smaller unit sizes and innovative resupply methods, highlighting the evolving nature of combat in the region.

The battle against drones remains a dynamic process, with soldiers like Vova emphasizing the importance of vigilance and adaptability in countering this airborne threat. Despite the technological advancements, the grim reality of losses weighs heavily on Ukrainian forces, underscoring the sacrifices made in the ongoing conflict.

As the war continues to exact a toll on both sides, the human cost is starkly evident. Ukrainian units face a relentless onslaught, with commanders like Vova bearing the burden of communicating with families of fallen soldiers. The scale of losses is staggering, underscoring the brutal nature of the conflict and the resilience of those fighting on the front lines.

In the face of devastation and depopulation, the fate of Ukrainian-held Donbas hangs in the balance. While political discussions on ceasefires persist, soldiers like Achilles remain focused on their mission, undeterred by diplomatic rhetoric as they confront the harsh realities of war on a daily basis.
