Photos depicting large cauliflower-shaped clouds are appearing on social media in the Vancouver area, identified by experts as pyrocumulus clouds formed by a wildfire more than 200 kilometers away. The B.C. Wildfire Service disclosed that the Anderson Creek fire was spotted by aircraft responding to a nearby fire on Tuesday, rapidly intensifying due to strong winds.
Meteorologist Matt Loney from Environment Canada explained that each fire produces substantial heat, with the Anderson Creek fire particularly exhibiting significant growth. Images shared on social platforms display towering cumulus clouds above dark smoke columns, visible from locations like Coquitlam, approximately 220 kilometers distant.
Loney elaborated that any source of intense heat capable of creating strong upward air currents can lead to the formation of such clouds, as hot air rises rapidly, causing moisture to condense. He likened the process to opening a freezer door on a scorching summer day, where fog rushes downward due to the temperature differential.
These clouds contain various particles, including burning debris, dust, and ashes, which become visible to the naked eye and spread horizontally once reaching a certain temperature threshold. The vertical growth of the pyrocumulus cloud from the Boston Bar-area fire indicates both the extreme heat and atmospheric instability, making it visible from multiple angles.
Rachel White, an atmospheric sciences assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, described the Fraser Canyon cloud images as remarkable and unsettling, expressing interest in observing them scientifically. She highlighted the potential for these clouds to trigger thunderstorms with lightning, posing a grave risk of sparking additional wildfires.
The phenomenon of pyrocumulus clouds serves as a reminder of how wildfires can influence weather patterns, with the potential to create hazardous conditions like lightning storms.
