Odhran McLaughlin faced a challenging task of corralling 15,000 crabs that had scattered on a highway in Ireland during the night. As the owner of McLaughlin’s Car Dismantlers and Recovery in Burnfoot, Ireland, McLaughlin received a call regarding an overturned transport truck in County Donegal, unaware that it was carrying live crabs.
The truck, loaded with $97,000 worth of brown crabs destined for Portugal, overturned, causing the container to burst open and releasing the crabs onto the road and nearby field. McLaughlin arrived at the scene to find the crabs scuttling towards the sea, attempting to escape.
Despite his expertise in car parts rather than crustaceans, McLaughlin sought help from local villages, including Burnfoot, Greencastle, and Moville. With the assistance of crab fishermen, a veterinarian, and numerous volunteers, around 80 individuals worked tirelessly for 18 hours to gather the crabs into sandbags and return them to their container using a crane.
Although 95% of the crabs were successfully rescued, some did not survive the ordeal, and a few managed to escape. Those recovered crabs, originally intended for restaurants, were deemed unfit for consumption after the incident and had to be disposed of.
While the cause of the accident remains uncertain, McLaughlin expressed concerns about inexperienced European drivers navigating rural roads in Donegal. Reflecting on the challenging experience, McLaughlin humorously mentioned that he had his fill of crabs and hoped to avoid encountering them in the future.
