Nature NB is conducting field surveys in Fredericton this summer to study native bumblebees, utilizing insect nets, vials, and a temperature-controlled cooler. This initiative aims to map bumblebee locations and habitats in New Brunswick and the Maritimes, led by program co-ordinator Francie Morgan. The project, in collaboration with the Mi’kmaq-led Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources, marks the first systematic survey of these sites to establish a baseline for future conservation efforts.
The team is examining bumblebee species in three neighborhoods on Fredericton’s north side, identifying them based on distinct color patterns on their abdomen and thorax. Despite being early in the season, six different species were recorded during the initial survey in June, out of the 18 known bumblebee species in New Brunswick. Data collected is shared with various organizations, including the Unama’ki Institute and iNaturalist, to aid global research and conservation efforts.
The timing of Nature NB’s program is crucial, coinciding with the recent release of a draft recovery strategy by the New Brunswick government for two local bumblebee species facing threats. Shaylyn Wallace, species at-risk manager at the Department of Natural Resources, emphasized the importance of understanding bumblebee locations for effective conservation, highlighting the role of these native pollinators in maintaining ecosystem stability.
Morgan emphasized the interconnectedness of species in ecosystems, stressing that protecting bumblebee habitats benefits other wildlife as well. Encouraging local residents to support wild pollinators, Morgan suggested allowing yard spaces to grow wild to create foraging habitats for bumblebees. This grassroots effort aligns with the broader goal of promoting biodiversity and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
