Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has initiated a collaboration with India and Australia on cutting-edge technologies during the recent G20 summit in South Africa. The trilateral pact seeks to foster cooperation among the three democratic nations in diversifying supply chains, promoting clean energy, and advancing the use of artificial intelligence.
This development signifies Canada’s efforts to mend ties with India following a period of tension stemming from allegations by the RCMP implicating New Delhi in the murder and extortion of Canadian nationals. In a joint announcement on Saturday, the trio unveiled the formation of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership (ACITI).
The partnership, as outlined in the statement, will leverage the inherent strengths of the three nations with a focus on green energy innovation, resilient supply chain development (including critical minerals), and the promotion of artificial intelligence for enhancing the quality of life for their populations. Plans are underway for officials from the three countries to convene in the initial quarter of 2026 to move the initiative forward.
Carney is currently attending the G20 summit in Johannesburg, where a majority of leaders have endorsed a collective declaration, despite the absence of the U.S. due to a boycott. The declaration encompasses commitments on climate change, women’s rights, and the Middle East, areas that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump had previously opposed at different junctures throughout the year.
