European Union ambassadors have come to an agreement to step up efforts to dissuade U.S. President Donald Trump from imposing tariffs on European allies. In the event that the tariffs are implemented, the EU is preparing retaliatory measures. Trump announced that eight countries, including EU members Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Britain, and Norway, could face a 10% tariff for opposing American control of Greenland.
EU leaders will convene for an emergency summit in Brussels to discuss potential options, such as imposing tariffs on $150 billion worth of U.S. imports or utilizing the “Anti-Coercion Instrument” to limit access to public tenders, investments, or trade in services where the U.S. holds a surplus with the EU.
The tariff package is receiving broader support as an initial response compared to anti-coercion measures, which are currently in a state of mixed reception. Trump’s actions have raised concerns about the stability of U.S. partnerships in Europe, with several European countries deploying troops to Greenland for Arctic security training.
In response to the tariff threats, the affected countries issued a joint statement asserting that such actions undermine transatlantic relations. Trump’s use of tariffs as leverage to initiate talks regarding the status of Greenland has sparked criticism and skepticism among European leaders.
The announcement of potential tariffs has drawn criticism not only from European allies but also from Trump’s populist supporters in Europe. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni labeled the tariffs as a “mistake” and emphasized that the troops deployed to Greenland were for security purposes against unidentified threats.
