Ahead of a potential strike by WestJet flight attendants, the airline has initiated the cancellation of 276 flights to avoid stranding crew and passengers. Travellers are advised to verify their flight status before heading to the airport. WestJet states that their recent proposal aimed to address the union’s key concerns and create a groundbreaking agreement for cabin crew. However, the flight attendants’ union expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal.

If an agreement is not reached by Sunday morning, a work stoppage could lead to the cancellation of numerous flights during the long weekend. WestJet is actively negotiating with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents 4,400 flight attendants, in hopes of reaching a mutually beneficial contract.

While progress has been made in negotiations, both sides still have unresolved issues to address. Federal mediators have been involved in the discussions, emphasizing the importance of reaching a deal at the bargaining table. The ongoing uncertainty has left passengers concerned about potential flight disruptions.

In response to the looming strike threat, WestJet has provided passengers with the flexibility to change or cancel flights without fees for certain bookings. Affected travellers will be notified of any changes by the airline directly or through third-party booking channels. The airline assures that customers impacted by delays or cancellations will be refunded or accommodated appropriately within the regulatory guidelines.

The dispute primarily revolves around compensation for ground duties, with the union contending that some tasks remain unpaid. WestJet’s current credit hour system combines various aspects of work to calculate pay rates. The company defends its approach, stating that it provides competitive rates within the industry standards. Amidst the escalating tensions, travellers like Gani Suleman are facing uncertainty and challenges in adjusting their travel plans.
