“Saskatchewan Company Drills for Natural Hydrogen”

A company based in Saskatchewan is conducting drilling operations to extract hydrogen from underground deposits, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of commercial-scale extraction without relying on fossil fuels. Regina-headquartered Max Power Mining recently initiated drilling of its third well at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan, with aspirations of establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system.

According to Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, hydrogen plays a vital role in various industries, including ammonia production, petroleum refining, and the shift towards cleaner energy sources. Natural hydrogen, sourced directly from underground deposits, offers a potentially eco-friendly alternative to the current energy-intensive methods of hydrogen production.

Hydrogen, known for its applications as a fuel and in electricity generation, produces water as the only byproduct, making it an attractive option for reducing emissions in sectors like transportation and steelmaking. However, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions.

In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy, offers a lower-emission alternative but remains costly and less competitive than grey hydrogen. Natural hydrogen, also referred to as white hydrogen, can be extracted with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, potentially leveraging existing extraction techniques used in the natural gas industry for cost-effective production.

The natural processes that give rise to underground hydrogen deposits include reactions with iron-rich rocks at high temperatures and radioactive decay processes. While the discovery of natural hydrogen deposits has sparked interest globally, including in Canada, challenges remain in extraction due to factors like dissolving hydrogen in water and the need for viable extraction rates to ensure cost-effective production.

As companies like Max Power continue their exploration and extraction efforts, the industry awaits further developments to determine the feasibility and impact of natural hydrogen on the path to decarbonization. The potential of natural hydrogen as a cleaner energy source hinges on successful extraction techniques and market viability, with ongoing research and exploration shaping the future of this emerging energy sector.
