Vancouver Rise FC received a warm welcome at Vancouver International Airport on Sunday, with fans singing and chanting as they celebrated the team’s victory in the inaugural Northern Super League (NSL) championship. The players had just staged a thrilling comeback against AFC Toronto in the championship final, which was marked by intense moments and dramatic twists.

Supporters of all ages gathered at the airport to greet the players, waving scarves and signs in excitement. Erika Wootten, a dedicated fan who had been following the team throughout the season, expressed her joy at meeting the players in person and thanking them for their hard work.

Wootten is a member of the Crow Collective, a passionate fan group for Vancouver Rise inspired by the nightly crow migration over Swangard Stadium. She emphasized the team’s resilience and gritty playing style, which were evident throughout the season.

Despite facing challenges, including being considered underdogs against AFC Toronto, Vancouver Rise demonstrated their determination and fighting spirit. Head coach Anja Heiner-Møller praised the fans for their unwavering support and credited them for the team’s success.

The team’s ability to stay composed under pressure and stage comebacks in difficult situations has been a defining factor in their journey to the championship. Forward Mariah Lee described the victory as surreal and emphasized its significance for women’s sports in Canada.

The championship win not only boosts Vancouver’s sports scene but also highlights the quality of women’s soccer in the country. Lee expressed confidence in the league’s potential to elevate women’s sports globally. Additionally, the federal government announced its commitment to supporting the NSL with a financial contribution to further develop women’s professional soccer in Canada.
