A group of dingoes discovered surrounding the deceased body of a young Canadian woman on an Australian beach will be euthanized, as announced by government authorities on Saturday. Piper James, a 19-year-old from Campbell River, B.C., had gone for an early-morning swim on K’gari, an island off Australia’s eastern coast, before her body was found by Queensland police, with approximately 10 dingoes present.
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism stated that initial autopsy findings did not attribute James’s death directly to dingo bites. However, the wild dogs exhibited aggressive behavior, leading officials to consider them a public safety threat. Consequently, the dingoes involved in the incident will be put down.
Queensland Environment Minister Andrew Powell acknowledged the difficult decision to euthanize the animals but deemed it necessary for public safety. Piper’s father, Todd James, expressed his sadness over the situation, awaiting the final autopsy report. The family intends to hold a “smoke ceremony” in Australia for Piper and bring her remains back home.

Dingo attacks on K’gari are not uncommon, with previous incidents reported, including one in July 2023 where a woman was chased and mauled by dingoes. The history of dingo attacks on the island dates back to 2001 when a nine-year-old boy was fatally attacked. The infamous death of Azaria Chamberlain in central Australia in 1980, attributed to dingoes, also remains a significant part of Australia’s dingo history.
