“Surge in Mosquito Populations Leads to Bug Spray Shortages in Prairie Cities”

This summer, some prairie cities faced a surge in mosquito populations, leading to bug spray shortages in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Data from the City of Edmonton revealed a significant increase in mosquitoes in July compared to the previous year. While not record-breaking, the rise in numbers has been noticeable, according to Peter Daly from the City of Edmonton.

Saskatoon and Winnipeg also reported higher mosquito counts in July compared to the previous year. Experts attribute the mosquito boom in southern Ontario to the excessive rainfall the region experienced, creating favorable conditions for species like Ochlerotatus trivittatus, known for laying eggs in water-filled areas.

Fiona Hunter, a professor at Brock University, highlighted the impact of the rainy weather on mosquito habitats in southern Ontario. The persistent biting behavior of Ochlerotatus trivittatus has increased human-mosquito interactions this year, contributing to the perception of a worse mosquito season.

Rosalind Murray from the University of Toronto mentioned that heavy rains triggered the hatching of dormant mosquito eggs, particularly in flood-prone areas like Toronto. However, as temperatures drop, mosquito activity is expected to decline, with the insects being less viable in extremely hot or cold conditions.

In Alberta, a recent cold spell led to a decrease in mosquito populations, following a challenging season due to early rainfall. While mosquito numbers have decreased in Edmonton, the warmer fall weather has slowed the decline compared to previous years. As temperatures rise again, mosquito activity may pick up, but not to the extent seen in central Canada.
