Upon viewing a video of a large creature resembling a lion entering the woods on the southwest coast of Ireland, John OâReilly was initially skeptical but intrigued. He expressed disbelief at the idea of a lion inhabiting an Irish forest while acknowledging the striking resemblance of the animal to a lion.
Contrary to expectations, the animal turned out to be a brown Newfoundland dog with a lion-style haircut.
‘Unbelievable Situation’
The saga began when workers from OâReilly’s forest management company in County Clare, Ireland, noticed a large unidentified animal moving in the woods. Despite limited visibility, one of the truck drivers managed to record the creature on camera last week.
The viral video footage captured a sizable brown animal with distinctive features running into the forest.
Although lions are not indigenous to Ireland, OâReilly, along with others, was convinced of what they saw and suspected the animal to be a unique pet.
Subsequently, OâReilly contacted the local police to report the unusual sighting. The police were astonished but investigated the matter promptly, leading to the identification of the animal.
According to a social media post by An Garda SÃochána, the “lion” was revealed to be a well-groomed Newfoundland dog named Mouse, who reportedly enjoyed the attention from the viral video.
Instances of dogs being mistaken for other creatures are not uncommon. Similar incidents include a Labradoodle styled as a lion causing alarm in Norfolk, Va., and a zoo in China under scrutiny for painting chow chows to resemble pandas.
