The chief of the BBC and the top news leader of the British broadcaster stepped down on Sunday following backlash over the editing of a speech by U.S. President Donald Trump. Director-general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness both announced their resignations on the same day.

The public broadcaster in Britain faced criticism for altering a speech by Trump on January 6, 2021, before the Capitol riots in Washington. Critics claimed that the edited version of the speech in a BBC documentary was misleading as it omitted the part where Trump called for peaceful demonstrations.

In a letter to staff, Davie expressed that his decision to resign after five years was entirely personal. He mentioned working with the Board to ensure a smooth transition to a successor in the upcoming months.

Turness acknowledged that the controversy surrounding the Trump documentary was damaging the BBC, an institution she holds dear. Defending the BBC’s journalists against bias accusations, she emphasized their dedication to impartiality and denied any institutional bias, although acknowledging mistakes happen.

The situation escalated as Trump shared a Daily Telegraph article on the speech editing on his Truth Social network, criticizing the journalists and alleging interference in the presidential election. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also weighed in, pointing out the contrast between the Telegraph article and Davie’s resignation.

The pressure on BBC executives heightened when a report by Michael Prescott highlighted concerns over the Trump speech edit, the BBC’s coverage of transgender issues, and potential anti-Israel bias in the BBC’s Arabic service. The broadcaster, funded by a compulsory annual license fee, faces intense scrutiny and criticism due to its status as a national institution.

While the BBC offers diverse entertainment and sports content, its news division is under constant scrutiny. Mandated to uphold impartiality, the BBC often faces criticism from various political perspectives, with conservatives perceiving a leftist bias and liberals alleging a conservative slant.

Furthermore, the BBC drew criticism for its coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict, leading to the removal of a Gaza documentary from its streaming service. Political figures called for significant reforms within the BBC to address perceived institutional bias, emphasizing the crucial role of trusted news and quality programming in democratic and cultural spheres.
