Celebrated performer and advocate for Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox, expressed a mix of “pride” and “humility” upon receiving a higher distinction within the Order of Canada on Friday. During the ceremony at Rideau Hall, Fox received a standing ovation as Governor General Louise Arbour officially conferred upon him the companion level in recognition of his impactful global advocacy and candid discussions about Parkinson’s.

Reflecting on the honor, Fox shared with The Canadian Press his deep-rooted love for Canada, its values, and its journey of progress and resilience. He attributed his uniquely Canadian identity to his upbringing and appreciation for Canadian music and culture.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative nervous system condition characterized by tremors, stiffness, and cognitive challenges. Since publicly disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, Fox has been actively involved in fundraising for research and raising awareness about the disease’s challenges.

Among the 51 individuals honored within the Order of Canada on that day, Fox’s commitment to advocacy stood out. Governor General Arbour commended all inductees for their dedication to using their talents for the greater good, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and contribution to societal well-being.

In addition to Fox, notable figures like Yusuf Altintas, Nada Jabado, Stephen Poloz, Ruth Elsie Abernethy, Susanne Craig, Colin Roswell Clarke, Marcelle Dubois, and Patrick Joseph Lahey were recognized for their exceptional contributions across various fields, from academia to the arts. Each honoree was praised for their outstanding work and commitment to making a positive impact on society.

As a tribute to Fox’s iconic roles in the “Back to the Future” movies, Governor General Arbour referenced his enduring influence and encouraged a forward-looking approach to progress. The ceremony highlighted the diverse achievements and significant contributions of the honorees, showcasing their collective dedication to advancing their respective fields and bettering their communities.
