Gregory Walters, a resident of Vancouver, reflects on his journey to acceptance of his identity as a gay man. Growing up, he was drawn to traditional fairy tales but felt a disconnect when it came to envisioning his own future. Despite excelling academically and pursuing a career as a school teacher, he grappled with his sexuality in a society where being gay was not widely accepted.

In the 1990s, Gregory found love twice but never considered marriage due to societal barriers and personal fears related to discrimination and the AIDS crisis. He initially viewed the push for gay marriage rights as a distraction from more pressing issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

As same-sex marriage became legal in Canada in 2005, Gregory felt it was a milestone more relevant to younger generations. He had come to terms with not being the marrying type and had internalized homophobia that made him question the validity of his identity in society’s eyes.

However, love eventually changed his perspective. In his current relationship with Stephen, marriage has become a practical consideration to overcome geographical challenges and solidify their commitment. Gregory recognizes the depth of his connection with Stephen and envisions a future where they can legally marry and build a life together.

Embracing the idea of marriage represents a significant shift for Gregory, who now sees it as a meaningful symbol of love and unity with Stephen. Their envisioned union would be a personal and intimate affair, reflecting their individualities and shared values.

Looking ahead, Gregory is eager to call Stephen his husband, a title that holds newfound significance and legitimacy in their journey towards their own version of happily ever after.
