AFC Toronto secured a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Roses in the first leg of the Northern Super League semifinal on Saturday. Nikayla Small and Kaylee Hunter scored in the seventh and 70th minutes, respectively. The second leg will be held at York Lions Stadium on Nov. 9.

Toronto coach Marko Milanovic expressed confidence in winning the upcoming game, emphasizing consistent preparation since the preseason. Goalkeeper Sierra Cota-Yarde maintained a clean sheet at Stade Boréale, with Milanovic praising her outstanding performance.

Despite both teams having opportunities, Toronto capitalized on theirs, while Montreal couldn’t convert. Milanovic credited Cota-Yarde and the backline for their solid defensive display, especially considering the team’s injury challenges. The medical team’s efforts were also acknowledged for contributing to the victory.

In another semifinal matchup, Ottawa Rapid FC will face the Vancouver Rise at TD Place. The winners of the semifinals will compete in the championship match on Nov. 15 at BMO Field.

Small scored early with a right-foot shot, followed by Hunter’s goal after shaking off a defender. Small highlighted the importance of the early goal in challenging weather conditions. Hunter, a standout performer in the league, ranked second in scoring during the inaugural season and was named Rookie of the Year.

Toronto finished atop the NSL standings with 16 wins in the first season, entering the playoffs on a five-game winning streak. The Roses secured the final playoff spot with a 10-9-6 record.

Fans can watch the full match replay of the semifinal between Montreal and Toronto to catch the action from Stade Boréale.
