A former chief medical officer of health in Alberta expressed disappointment over the province’s role in Canada losing its measles elimination status. Dr. James Talbot highlighted Alberta’s responsibility for a significant portion of the country’s measles cases, leading to the loss of its elimination status achieved in 1998.

Dr. Talbot, along with other experts, criticized the provincial government’s handling of the measles outbreaks, citing inadequate messaging on immunization importance and measles risks. Alberta reported 1,956 cases since the outbreaks started in March, surpassing the entire U.S. case count.

While Alberta has seen a slowdown in transmission recently, with two individuals currently hospitalized, Dr. Karina Top emphasized the need for collective action at various levels to address declining vaccination rates that worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Alberta Medical Association expressed disappointment, stressing the urgency for strong public health leadership to combat vaccine hesitancy and improve immunization rates. The province defended its vaccination efforts, noting a decline in measles cases and increased vaccination uptake, especially in historically low-rate zones.

Despite the challenges, experts believe Canada can regain its measles elimination status with enhanced vaccination accessibility, public education, and community engagement. Dr. Natasha Crowcroft remains optimistic, stating that halting the current measles strain transmission for at least a year could restore the country’s elimination status.
