A doll resembling the character Anne of Green Gables has caused a stir online, with social media users dubbing it “Anne of Scream Gables.” The doll, with its striking eyes and red braids, was discovered at a thrift store in Cape Breton and shared on Facebook for amusement.
Despite the jests, a man from Nova Scotia, Andrew Danylewich, recognized the doll as a piece of art crafted by his late mother, Heather Danylewich. Heather, a fabric artist from Ottawa, specialized in creating oversized fabric works, including intricate fabric murals. Andrew, who runs ADJA Studio and Gallery in Liverpool, N.S., was surprised to see his mother’s creation on social media.
He explained that the doll was likely made to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the publication of the novel “Anne of Green Gables.” Heather’s unique soft sculpture artistry is not widely known, with only a few surviving pieces, some of which are housed at Library and Archives Canada.
Although the doll has since disappeared from the thrift store, Andrew hopes to locate it and display it at his gallery. Despite the teasing the doll has received, he still appreciates the sentimental value it holds as a creation of his mother.
