Ian Williams, a renowned author of various literary works, delved into the world of construction to capture the essence of his protagonist in his latest book, “You’ve Changed.” As an English professor at the University of Toronto and the director of the creative writing program, Williams brings a unique perspective to his storytelling.

In “You’ve Changed,” the narrative revolves around Beckett and Princess, a middle-aged couple facing marital struggles. Their relationship takes a tumultuous turn when their friends visit, triggering parallel mid-life crises. While Princess contemplates cosmetic surgery to address their issues, Beckett opts to revive his contracting business in hopes of revitalizing their connection.

This insightful and humorous novel explores the dynamics of change within relationships, raising thought-provoking questions about personal transformation. Notably, “You’ve Changed” garnered recognition by being longlisted for the prestigious 2025 Giller Prize.

During an interview on “Bookends with Mattea Roach,” Williams shared the inspiration behind the book’s title, derived from a striking mural in Toronto. The protagonist, Beckett, a white Quaker characterized as a “redneck” by some, offers a unique lens into exploring diverse perspectives.

Williams’s commitment to understanding his characters led him to enroll in a construction course to immerse himself in Beckett’s world. By participating in hands-on construction work, including building and demolishing a house, Williams gained invaluable insights into Beckett’s mindset and experiences.

The novel also delves into themes of masculinity, identity, and societal expectations, challenging conventional notions of manhood. Williams skillfully navigates these complex themes, demonstrating the power of storytelling to illuminate diverse human experiences.

Through “You’ve Changed,” Ian Williams delivers a compelling narrative that invites readers to ponder the intricacies of relationships, personal growth, and the evolving nature of identity in a rapidly changing world.
