The B.C. Lions have turned their season around, entering the CFL playoffs with a six-game winning streak after defeating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 27-21. This victory secured the Lions’ second place in the West Division with an 11-7 record. They will now prepare to face the Calgary Stampeders in the West semifinal on Nov. 1 in Vancouver.
In contrast, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, finishing fourth in the West at 10-8, will cross over to play the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division semifinal also on Nov. 1.
The Lions struggled initially with a 1-3 start and a 3-5 record by July. However, they bounced back in the second half of the season with an 8-2 run, gaining momentum as they approached the playoffs.
Quarterback Nathan Rourke acknowledged their early struggles but highlighted the team’s belief in themselves and their ability to execute plays effectively. Rourke’s performance in the game was impressive, completing 23 of 28 passes for 366 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
The match had a pivotal moment in the third quarter when a controversial call overturned a potential touchdown for the Roughriders. Despite trailing 18-10, the Lions capitalized on this momentum shift to secure a 27-21 lead in the fourth quarter, ultimately winning the game.
Looking ahead, Rourke aims to focus on the upcoming game against Calgary rather than individual accolades. The Riders, who secured first place in the West earlier, will have a week off before hosting the West final on Nov. 8.
Both teams expressed determination and focus heading into the playoffs, emphasizing the need to maintain their performance levels for a successful postseason campaign.
