Mervyn Perry recounted a night in May 2023 when he went to bed unaware that a tire had been set on fire on his property in Barrington, N.S., eventually becoming part of the province’s largest wildfire. Recent court documents from Dalton Stewart’s sentencing, charged under the Forests Act, revealed that the tire fire occurred on Perry’s land near Barrington Lake.
It was only after noticing smoke and hearing social media discussions in the days following the incident that the 86-year-old realized the fire had started on his over 100-hectare property. Perry expressed frustration, emphasizing that individuals should respect private property boundaries and avoid causing harm.
Stewart, who admitted guilt to a Forests Act violation, received a $25,000 fine on October 16. The court record detailed the events of May 25, 2023, describing how Stewart used cardboard and motor oil as accelerants to ignite the fire near a local landmark known as Homer’s Rock.
Although Perry’s home and cottage were spared, the wildfire consumed over 23,000 hectares, leading to significant property damage and displacing numerous individuals. Perry lamented the destruction of the once-beautiful land, acknowledging the unforeseen consequences of the wildfire.
Despite the painful impact on the community, no additional charges were filed against others involved in the incident. The Crown described the imposed fine as substantial and just, recognizing the lasting effects on those affected. Volunteer firefighter Kevin Doane expressed ongoing distress over the losses suffered and emphasized the emotional toll on the community.
Perry, looking to the future, accepted the need to move forward and expressed hope that his children would one day enjoy the land as he once did. The community, while striving to recover, continues to grapple with the aftermath of the devastating wildfire.
