Bo Bichette has turned down a qualifying offer from the Toronto Blue Jays, indicating that the seasoned seven-season Major League player will now assess offers from various teams in the open market.
At 27 years old, Bichette has been a key player for the Blue Jays throughout his career. While there is a possibility of him staying with Toronto, the team will need to contend with other interested parties to secure his services for the upcoming seasons.
Qualifying offers are made to certain eligible players entering free agency to ensure that teams receive draft-pick compensation if those players sign elsewhere. Bichette was one of nine players this year who rejected such offers. The 2026 qualifying offer amount was set at $22,025,000 US, based on the average salary of the top 125 MLB players.
Among the players who accepted qualifying offers were Shota Imanaga of the Chicago Cubs, Gleyber Torres of the Detroit Tigers, Brandon Woodruff of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Trent Grisham of the New York Yankees. Besides Bichette, other players who declined the offers included Kyle Tucker, Kyle Schwarber, Ranger Suárez, Dylan Cease, Michael King, Edwin Díaz, Zac Gallen, and Framber Valdez.
During the regular season, Bichette performed well for the Blue Jays, although a knee injury sidelined him in the final weeks of the pennant race. Despite missing the initial playoff rounds, he returned for the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The intense seven-game series culminated in a dramatic Game 7, with the Dodgers ultimately triumphing in extra innings. Bichette notably hit a home run off Shohei Ohtani in the third inning of Game 7, contributing to Toronto’s early lead that was later surpassed by the Dodgers.
Throughout the World Series, Bichette showcased a .348 batting average, with eight hits, four walks, six RBIs, and two runs scored. With the Blue Jays coming close to a championship win, the organization faces heightened expectations to make a strong comeback in the following season.
Apart from Bichette, there are other Blue Jays players who are currently free agents. The team is particularly focused on retaining the services of hot-hitting infielder Bichette, alongside pitchers Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer, and infielders Ty France, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and reliever Seranthony Domínguez.
While some notable free agents have yet to sign deals, one exception is Josh Naylor, who agreed to a lucrative five-year contract worth $92.5 million US to stay with the Seattle Mariners. Naylor, a formidable opponent for the Blue Jays in the recent American League Championship Series, boasted an impressive .417 batting average and hit three home runs against Toronto pitchers.
Despite the challenging competition, the Blue Jays managed to defeat the Mariners and advance to the World Series, setting the stage for an exciting offseason in the MLB.
