Residents of Star Blanket Cree Nation experienced a significant event as they witnessed the return of bison to their community after many years. Families gathered over the snowy May long weekend to welcome the new herd, marking a historic day for the nation.

Sharon Strongarm, present at the bison release with her grandchildren, expressed the emotional impact of the moment. She emphasized the spiritual significance of reintroducing the buffalo to their land, highlighting the cultural importance for their community.

The late grandfather of Ariane Starblanket, a former chief of Star Blanket, had a vision of reintroducing buffalo to the community for healing and food sovereignty purposes. Starblanket, the project manager for the bison release, emphasized the legacy left by her grandfather and the importance of youth involvement in caring for the bison.

The arrival of the bison symbolized a moment of cultural restoration and revitalization for the community. Starblanket stressed the healing energy felt during the release and the emotional response it evoked among community members.

Tristan Starr-Desnomie, selected as one of the bison keepers, shared his excitement and honor in taking on this responsibility. He highlighted the unique care required for bison compared to other animals and looked forward to witnessing the calving process.

As the bison settled into their new home, caretakers noted their calm demeanor and the generational aspect of caring for the animals. Plans to expand the bison’s habitat were discussed, with future hopes of utilizing the herd for food, clothing, and medicine.

Looking ahead, the community anticipates the educational benefits of having the bison present and aims to empower future generations by instilling the cultural significance of the animals.
