Canada’s federal government has surpassed its internal greenhouse gas reduction goals, cutting carbon pollution from its operations by 42.5% below 2005 levels, exceeding the targeted 40% reduction. This reduction amounts to 1.024 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to removing pollution from over 238,000 gas-powered passenger cars annually.
The government aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, striving to eliminate carbon pollution while offsetting any remaining emissions with removal measures or technology. The initiative, initiated in 2017 by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, covers various aspects like buildings, vehicles, and government services, including safety and security fleets such as warships, Coast Guard vessels, aircraft, and tanks.
Although the government approved 25 new projects to reduce its carbon footprint through the Greening Government Fund, there is no independent verification of the emissions reductions or a detailed breakdown by department in the news release. Additionally, it remains unclear how Scope 3 emissions, generated by the government’s suppliers or products/services offered, were addressed.
As the largest employer in the nation with a significant asset portfolio and procurement budget, the federal government’s actions could influence Crown corporations, suppliers, and other entities towards adopting greener practices and technologies. The Greening Government Fund has allocated over $80 million to support more than 130 projects aimed at reducing emissions from government operations.
While the government is making progress in reducing emissions within its operations, projections indicate that Canada may fall short of its 2030 climate target. The current trajectory suggests a 21% reduction below 2005 levels by the end of the decade, with potential for a 28% reduction if additional climate policies are implemented.
Overall, the government’s efforts contrast with the nation’s projected shortfall in meeting climate goals, highlighting the importance of continued action to address environmental challenges.
